Aconjunctionisawordthatlinkswords,phrases,orclauses.Therearethreetypesofconjunctions:coordinatingconjunctions,correlativeconjunctions,andsubordinatingconjunctions.Coordinatingconjunctionsmayjoinsinglewords,ortheymayjoingroupsofwords,buttheymustalwaysjoinsimilarelements:e.g.subject+subject,verbphrase+verbphrase,sentence+sentence.Whenacoordinatingconjunctionisusedtojoinelements,theelementbecomesacompoundelement.Correlativeconjunctionsalsoconnectsentenceelementsofthesamekind:however,unlikecoordinatingconjunctions,correlativeconjunctionsarealwaysusedinpairs.Subordinatingconjunctions,thelargestclassofconjunctions,connectsubordinateclausestoamainclause.Theseconjunctionsareadverbsusedasconjunctions.
